In the twenties, Wim Oepts meats Charley Toorop and become friends. He often stayed in her house "The Vlerken" in Bergen which was a meeting point for artists. She encouraged him to paint.
This self-portrait shows Charley Toorop's influence in his way of working: It's become a powerful head with strong features and large eyes.
This is one of the few paintings he made at that time.
